Lean has gained popularity in the manufacturing sector most notably through the
experience and success of the Toyota Production System. Yet the principles of
Lean, or waste elimination, are being seen more widely used in non manufacturing
sectors. This of course raises many surprising questions about how it is
possible.
Well its quite simple; waste exists in every process in some form or another
and therefore the principle of ridding a business of waste to allow a process to
go faster can be applied anywhere.
It is fair to say that some of the tools which work well in manufacturing do
not work so well in non manufacturing. But Lean is not about tools – it’s about
a different way of looking and thinking about your business.
