Think of a senario where you go to work and the time it takes can vary; sometime
you are late. Or when you go to a store and the time it takes for you to be
served varies; sometimes it simply is just too long. Or when you call the gas
company who has stopped your supply and one person can never resolve the issue.
Or when you want to tell you satellite or cable television company you are
moving home and you have to speak to four different departments to organise your
new television system in your new home! If any of these sound familiar that’s
because those processes, as well as every process, suffers from
variation. But some variation does not really bother us, but some variation
really causes us or our customers problems. Therefore we have to reduce it to a
point where it no longer bothers us. In simple terms this is what 6 Sigma is
about – reducing a process to a point where it no longer bothers us. Yet to do
this takes leadership, structure, skills, training, support, mentoring and some
